100 Hagley Road

SPA were appointed by Calthorpe Estates to substantially remodel 100 Hagley Road, an existing 1960s office building, into new high quality sustainable and flexible office accommodation (Barker Brettell), plus retail space at ground floor (currenly WEX).  Situated on an important gateway site to both the city and the Calthorpe Estate, the building is to be stripped back to the original concrete structural frame before being reclad, refitted and an additional floor added.

Locaction: Birmingham UK

Project completion: 2009

Client: Calthorpe Estates

The building is designed in a simple modernist style featuring ribbon glazing and crisp white render, respecting the 1960s origins of the building and complementing the historic Georgian buildings of the Edgbaston Conservation Area.  To the rear of the remodelled building full height glazing affords pleasant views out over the leafy Calthorpe Estate.

Designed to be highly sustainable, the building has received a BREEAM Very Good rating, and features a range of water and energy saving measures including solar thermal panels and a biomass heating system, as well as cycle storage and changing facilities for cyclists.

Futher development to the site continued with 104 Hagley Road in 2015-2016.

100 Hagley Road is located in Edgbaston which was voted one of the ‘best places to live in Britain’ by the Sunday Times.

It is home to elegant period properties, green spaces, tree-lined avenues, award winning bars and restaurants, and is located only 1 mile away from the Birmingham City Centre.
